Our Mission & Vision

Taking the Reins encourages girls in Los Angeles to act boldly, with courage and confidence, through experiences with horses at our urban farm.

TTR was founded in 1998 by two horsewomen who recognized the extraordinary potential of an equine-based, educational program for L.A.’s most under-resourced urban girls.

Our Programs

Equestrian Program

The beauty of horseback riding is that you need to learn how to be in
complete control while at the same time in complete surrender. It’s a condition
that you cannot explain until you have climbed onto the back of a horse and held the reins in your hand.

Garden Program

Through the organic garden seed-to-skillet program, girls learn about organic gardening, healthy cooking, nutrition, and environmental stewardship. The grounds and garden provide a living laboratory where girls learn to make healthier dietary decisions.

Farm Animal Science

Participants interact with and care for sheep, rabbits, goats, chickens, ducks, horses, ponies, dogs, and cats. Girls experience our farm animals as vulnerable beings in need
of care and feeding, as well as providers of agricultural products, (eggs, goat’s milk, cheese, etc.) and helpers who provide services (barn cats who protect the feed room from rodents, dogs who protect the premises).

Learning Center

Learning Center offers our core participants hands-on S.T.E.A.M.* based classes and experiences. Additionally,we open our doors and host field trips, tours, workshops, and classes for visiting students from LA Schools and youth non-profits. All of the classes highlight ecology and environmental conservation as students learn to be mindful stewards of our planet.
